Blue Chilli Bar & Cafe

The original Phnom Penh drag bar since 2008, Blue Chilli is still a firm favourite with expats and Khmers and they bill themselves as the longest-running gay bar in Cambodia, which is not nearly true.

That award goes to the Linga Bar in Siem Reap, which celebrated its 11th birthday in 2015 — a full four years older, though they might not admit it in public.

Blue Chilli is packed every Friday and Saturday night for the 23:00 show, with the acts lip-synching and dancing precariously on the bar in shoes few but the most diva divas would be able to stand up in. Remembering the age-old motto of “Never look a drag queen in the eye”, the pavement outside is cooler, less squashed and out of reach for impromptu audience participation.

Blue Chilli’s fun and lively atmosphere makes for a spiriting drop off for a pre-clubbing drink, or a pick-up. The place is known for its gay freelancers who are reputed to have sticky fingers, so hold onto your valuables.
