Roots & Burgers

Tucked into the just-starting-to-buzz Tuol Tum Pung area of Phnom Penh, Roots & Burgers is a sleekly designed Asian burger joint serving up excellent bao buns, burgers, and drinks.

Sleeker than your average burger joint.

Sleeker than your average burger joint.

We’d say “fusion” — they say “Asia in a bun” — but we hate fusion, and we really loved their bao buns. We tried the braised beef bao, which came with green mango, chopped herbs and roasted peanuts ($3.75 for one, $6.75 for two) and the pomegranate cured duck with ginger gel, yam and spring onions ($4.15 for one, $6.95 for two). The meats were flavourful, veggies crisp and buns heavenly.

Yes. So much yes.

Yes. So much yes.

Also on the menu are an interesting handful of burgers: Asian chicken, cheeseburger with ginger and sesame sauce, wasabi tempura dory, and pork belly ($4.95-$7.95). Putting the roots into Roots & Burgers are their fries and crisps: taro, potato, lotus or sweet potato. A few salads and sides mix it all up.

Burgers AND booze.

Desserts sound good though we didn’t try them: Shibuya caramel toast with mango and whipped cream, chocolate mochi, peanut fried ice cream, and ice balls in flavours like Kampot pepper and durian ($1.50-$5.95).

Sweet potato disguised as a cocktail.

While there are slow pressed juices and lassies on the menu, we did try a cocktail (all $3.95): a sweet potato old-fashioned, made with house-made sweet potato (there’s a root again…) syrup, bourbon and black walnut bitters. It was smooth and strong. We would have tried another but, well, we wanted to head to Tipico upstairs afterwards to check it out too.

The brains behind Roots & Burgers is the manager director of the FCC, Marco Eggert and his partner Tania Unsworth. Their hospitality background shows, with the industrial vibe space a place you’ll want to linger longer than your average burger joint — though their upstairs bar is likely to tempt those wanting to make a night out of a trip here.

If you’re heading to the Russian Market, this is an easy spot to grab some lunch and cool off in the seriously chilled air-con.
