Pop Cafe

Quite simply, Pop Cafe serves the best pasta in Phnom Penh, if not Cambodia, and you’ll be hard-pushed to find a soul in the capital in full possession of their wits who would disagree with you. Around a decade ago, Pop Cafe Da Giorgio was the first Italian restaurant to open in Phnom Penh. For those who don’t know about it — Giorgio is a technophobe, so the restaurant doesn’t even have a Facebook page — the discovery is always a moment of revelation. There are still people who have been here for years who haven’t found it yet. You won’t have this problem.

It’s a small, unembellished spot, tucked in just underneath FCC on Sisowath Quay. In fairness, with food this good, you don’t really need to spend a great deal on elaborate furnishings, and the effect is simple, unaffected and very comfortable. It fills up quickly in the evenings and the chatter and laughter — amid moments of delighted silence — ring through the long, narrow air-con room.

No fuss, all flavour.

No fuss, all flavour.

Pop Cafe serves up a wide range of pasta dishes, pizzas, gnocchi, mains and specials. We have come to the conclusion that there is a bank of atomic clocks over their cookers so perfect is the pasta each and every time; it’s the only rational explanation we can think of. He sticks to the classics, with sauces that are rich, dense and bursting with all the right flavours.

More things to be passionate about!

More things to go nuts about!

The rest of it isn’t bad either. The pizzas are thin and light and crispy in all the right places. Mains range from $6.50 to $12. The house wines were lovely, and very reasonably priced at $4 a glass. We’re always happy when restaurants don’t insult their guests with cheap, barely drinkable house wines as is still too often the case, though not here.

This is not to be missed for Italian fans, and anyone actually with any appreciation of good food.
