Technically, even though it’s always pretty hot in Bali, it’s summer time now — so you have an even better excuse to indulge in a scoop of ice cream or three while you’re here. Yes it’s not hardy travel, this eating ice cream business, I’ll grant you that. Still, ice cream. Ice. Cream.
Sanur now has some serious ice cream joints — it’s practically a craze, with three of the four places below opening in the past few months. I’m going to countdown my favourite spots backwards here, from good, through to very good, through to excellent, though the scale really is tight — all are recommended. Price is out of the equation as all single scoop cups will set you back 20,000 rupiah.
They call a standard serving a baby cup at Pippo, but there’s nothing baby about it at all: it’s a full-size cup, and they fill it to way overflowing. Look out for the single table inside, and a little bench on the road, so you can sit down and get licking immediately. The friendly staff will happily give you two selections from among their fairly standard range of flavours. We found the ice cream a little on the light rather than dense side, and maybe a touch sweet to our taste — but for a real sweet tooth, this would probably be perfect. This is a good spot to head after a meal at the Sanur night market, which is spitting distance away.

Massimo has been around for years and has a huge array of really solid classic and luscious flavours on offer. This is not quite as sweet as Pippo but it’s also quite a light and big scoop. The chocolate chilli is divine. They sell takeaway directly on the street, but you can dine in if you like and we do recommend this. The cheap and cheerful Italian restaurant is one of the island’s most authentic — trust me, we’ve heard it from an Italian who knows his stuff.

Gelato Secrets has had a branch in Ubud for a while, but their second shop in Sanur only opened a few months ago, right at the front of Hardy’s on the street (almost opposite Cafe Batujimbar). Buy a takeaway scoop, or sit at one of the two or three small tables streetside. The big lure here is the array of flavours using local ingredients imaginatively — sesame and honey? Banana and palm sugar? Avocado and chocolate chips? Kiwi mojito? (Okay, rum is pushing it.) Despite all the local love, I admit to adoring their Oreo flavour, which was just so beautifully chewy — their salted caramel was a little fluffier in texture but just as tasty.

Gaya wins on the strength of two things: the gorgeous simplicity of its smooth, natural ice cream, and its fantastic position on Sanur beach. This is the only outlet of the four directly on the beach, which is a shame really for who doesn’t like to jump in the saltwater to wash of the dripped dregs of a cone on a hot day? But back to the ice cream: Gaya markets themselves as being the only artisan and completely natural ice cream on the island — we’ve written about Gaya in Ubud, and the product here is just the same: scented with the spices of Bali and made with the passion of Italy. It’s really good. It’s that simple.
