Joma Bakery Cafe is something of a phenomenon with locations now in Hanoi and Phnom Penh, but Vientiane is where it all started in the late 90s.
Joma remains a crowd pleaser, heaven sent for backpackers who have had one too many noodle soups or fried rice. The North American-style cafe offers a broad variety of cooked breakfasts, homemade soups, bagels, create-your-own sandwiches, pizza, lasagne and salads. It’s fast food but it’s fresh food.
Their house blend of organic coffee is grown in the Bolaven Plateau in southern Laos, and there’s decaf available. Some may turn their noses at the coffee, saying it is nothing special, but the coffee is good and a large gets you a free refill which will have you bouncing off the walls. The baked sweets are just okay – if you want a croissant you should be heading around the corner to Le Banneton. But come holiday time, here is the place to get a slice of home with apple or pumpkin pie and roast turkey sandwiches with all the trimmings.
There is indoor/outdoor seating, local newspapers and free WiFi so you can check out Vientiane guesthouse reviews on Travelfish. The service is usually efficient too – order at the counter and food is delivered to your table. There are two other locations in Vientiane, one at the foot of That Luang stupa (Nongbone and Singha Roads) and on Dongpaina Road (between Sendara Fitness and the water tower). Call (020) 2204 4555 for delivery, available until 16:00. There are also two locations in Luang Prabang.
