Anything but Tiger!

More on Downtown Singapore

Though Tiger is undisputedly the official brew of Singapore, if you’re looking for a locally-brewed beer with a little more oomph there are some fine options.

Travelfish says:
A pint a day keeps the doctor away.

A pint a day keeps the doctor away.

The obvious choice is Brewerkz and it won’t disappoint. The huge restaurant at Clarke Quay also serves as the factory and on any given day you’ll find more than 10 beers on tap. Some, like the tried and true golden ale and European-style pilsner, are always on the menu while more experimental brews, like one flavoured with dragonfruit, come and go. Save for one named “Smokey the Beer” which tasted like a house fire, I’ve enjoyed every Brewerkz blend I’ve tried. Pints cost S$6-14 depending on the time of day or join the Tuesday night pub quiz to lock in the happy hour price of S$9 all night.

Also at Clarke Quay is The Pump Room which brews their 100% natural, preservative-free beers on site. There are five staple brews – their signature lager, Czech-style lager, Scottish ale, Indian pale ale, and wheat beer – and the occasional guest brewmaster blend. The bistro-style food is pretty refined for a beer joint and there’s a live band six nights a week. Show up before 20:00 and a happy hour pint will set you back just S$9.

An import from Thailand, Tawandang Microbrewery has taken the best of both worlds and pairs their German-style suds with spicy seafood. Their three signature beers – a classic lager, wheat beer, and malty dark dunkel – are brewed on site by their genuine Bavarian brewmaster. The Dempsey Hill location is the most fun with a rowdy beer hall atmosphere and live Thai band, but if you’re in Singapore for business the second location at Suntec City Convention Centre is perfect for a post-work pint. (Read about the original Bangkok location here).

Because you deserve better than Tiger.

Beer fans deserve better than Tiger.

For a beer you’ll never forget, head to Reddot Brewhouse to sample their infamous “monster green lager”. A kind of algae called spirulina gives it the striking green colour and doesn’t affect the taste nearly as much as you’d expect. There are five or so other beers on tap including a couple customised for the sticky Singapore weather – the hoppy summer ale and lime wheat beer are very refreshing in the heat. The beer is brewed at the Dempsey Hill location and drinkers have a full view of the brew room, but you can also find Reddot Brewhouse at Boat Quay.
