Chaloklum is a lovely little fishing village in the north of Ko Pha Ngan, between Mae Haad and Bottle Beach. The beach itself is long, with the best sand towards the eastern end, and the bulk of the restaurants, and the pier, towards the west.

Chaloklum Beach Ko Pha Ngan

What’s great about Chaloklum is it’s one of the only parts of Ko Pha Ngan that truly feels like a village, and the Thai way of life still reigns supreme. Here’s a selection of the best places to stay, eat and hang out in Chaloklum.

Best seafood restaurant: Nong Nook

Nong Nook Seafood

Fresh and delicious seafood

Being a fishing village, it’s no surprise that Chaloklum has a wonderful selection of seafood. Nong Nook restaurant, which can be found in the U-shaped road near the ocean, next to Cafe Della Mocha, offers up seafood that’s fresh and delicious, with generous portions. Be sure to order the barbecue tiger prawns, smothered in caramelised garlic — they are to die for! Wash it down with a cold glass of white wine.

Best hangout spot: Cafe Della Mocha, Cucina Italiana

Cafe Della Mocha

Chill, eat pizza, and be merry

Chaloklum is home to a few bars, but everyone seems to love hanging out at the local pizzeria, where a true Italian chef greets every guest with a welcoming, “Bueno sera!” Not only is the pizza delicious, but the wine and beer are cheap, and seating near the beach is plentiful, lending the restaurant an atmosphere that’s great for catching up with friends or a touch of romance. Find Cafe Della Mocha in the middle of the horseshoe area that is Chaloklum’s town centre. If you’re driving south and pass Two Brothers restaurant, you’ve gone too far — it’s right beside The Lost Dog.

Best bit o’beach: Outside Malibu Beach Bungalows

Malibu Beach Chaloklum

Check out the fine, white sands of Malibu.

The beach at Malibu Beach Bungalows has the whitest, finest sand in all of Chaloklum. Plunk yourself down at the beachside restaurant, swing in a hammock, join in a game of volleyball or just spread out a towel and take in the rays. Highly recommended for an afternoon tanning session.
