Afternoon market

Our rating:

Myawaddy’s afternoon market is a very authentic local-style market and one of the best we’ve come across in Burma (Myanmar).

It’s like Hpa-an’s market used to be – brilliant!

When locals recommended checking out the market we had visions of mounds of cheap Chinese electrical goods a la Tachileik but there wasn’t a souvenir, pirate DVD, erectile dysfunction pill or Chinese hairdryer in sight. It was just townsfolk buying fruit, veg, fish, spices and clothing.

The market is laid out down the centre of a long, narrow alley between rows of wooden shops, and is a shoe-in for all the market adjectival cliches: bustling, colourful, friendly, vibrant and of course congested and occasionally a bit smelly. It’s picturesque, photogenic and they definitely don’t see many foreigners in this market. We found a welcome tea shop at the halfway point, which made for a great spot to break up our stroll and sneak a few candid market shots.

There’s a morning market further west on the north side which is worth a peek, but as it’s a covered market it’s neither so picturesque nor photogenic.
