Myomar Market

Our rating:

Thaton’s hectic main market is a traditional style one and it’s typically lively and colourful in a fun, photogenic sort of way.

The market starts in the centre of town by the main highway and extends two blocks west as well as into the surrounding lanes. Officially the closest section to the highway is New Myomar Market and the adjacent area Old Myomar, though to be honest we couldn’t see any difference or spot where one ended and the other began. New is perhaps more indoor and old more outside.

Since it’s smack in the middle of town on the edge of the north-south highway, if anywhere in Thaton is going to see foreign visitors this is it. For now you’ll still very much be a novelty, so expect lots of stares, smiles and waves if you do wander around.

Choose a tea or curry shops to sit in and watch the goings on; a new fresh juice stand was setting up last time we visited in 2016. The market is particularly lively in the morning but it’s open all day and is well worth a visit if you’re passing through town. Many of the town’s local buses leave from the market area and the main pagoda, Shwe Sar Yan, is just across the main road.
