Shwe Taung Zar Pagoda

Our rating:

Shwe Taung Zar Pagoda, sprawling complex of shrines, statues and chedis, is Dawei’s most prestigious town temple.

Photo of Shwe Taung Zar Pagoda

A classic style Burmese temple and monastery, it comes with all the gold stupas, elaborate green roofs and red and gold paint you’d expect plus a large seated Buddha image. It isn’t the region’s most spectacular temple for casual visitors and it’s built on flat land so provides no view but it a very pleasant and tranquil spot for a stroll and presents plenty of photogenic aspects.

The old museum housed on the site appeared closed when we stopped by and we assume the exhibits have been moved to the new purpose-built museum in town.

How to get there
Follow Niban Road east from the junction with Ye Road and at the subsequent crossroads turn left. You’ll find the main entrance to the compound on your left along with a few stalls selling snacks and Buddhist paraphernalia. It's only a five-minute walk from the town centre.
