Aeon Mall

Our rating:

Opened in June 2014, for the first few weekends it seemed like all of Phnom Penh descended at once to get their fix at Japanese-run Aeon Mall. Half department store, half branded boutiques, it’s four floors of concentrated consumerism.

In case the traffic jams weren’t enough of a clue.

In case the traffic jams weren’t enough of a clue.

Located next to the Sofitel Phnom Penh Phokeethra Hotel, about 10 minutes from the Royal Palace, you’ll likely see the queues of traffic before the mall itself comes into view. But that’s not because it’s diminutive, no siree. This epic temple to the dollar is fully deserving of its mall tag, making the city’s previous offerings, such as Sorya Mall, seem distinctly parochial and catapulting the Cambodian capital into the gleaming-mall ranks of most of its Southeast Asian counterparts.

It’s a market, Jim, but not as we know it.

It’s a market, Jim, but not as we know it.

Aeon includes a large supermarket, brand names like Mango, Clarks, Pierre Cardin and Toni & Guy, plus more food outlets than you can shake a stuffed wallet at.

The ground floor supermarket has local produce clearly marked, next to an echoing food hall with sushi rolls from $1 and Cambodian favourites like cut fruit, jelly desserts and sugar cane juice. The Japan Dining and World Dining zones serve up Japanese barbecue, lobsters and French artisanal dining.

Sushi, sushi, sushi ...

Sushi, sushi, sushi …

As well as free WiFi in the dining areas, there’s a kids’ play area, a gaming arcade, bowling and a seven-screen cinema to maximise your air-con minutes.

Yay - free aircon!

Free air-con!

Things to look out for at Aeon include the cheap sushi, bras up to an E cup at Wacoal and of course Japanese brands galore.

Of course, for now, the Russian market and Central market are still going strong…
