Museum Pasifika

Our rating:

To rival the art museums in Ubud, Museum Pasifika is well worth a half day away from the beach if you have an interest in art and culture, we even think it merits a trip south if you’re staying in other parts of Bali. For everybody else it’s a good filler on a rainy day.

Across the road from the Bali Collection, the large museum displays an extensive collection paintings, drawings, prints and sculpture from Asia and the Pacific spanning several centuries including galleries dedicated to European Artists who lived and worked in the region.

Built around a central courtyard, 11 interconnecting galleries take you on a visual journey beginning in the lobby with a series of lithographic maps of the region by Miguel Covarrubias, a Mexican artist and writer who penned the still popular ethnographic study, Island of Bali. Works are well displayed with good lighting, labels in English and informative in-depth explanation of selected works.

The first gallery displays early Balinese classical works and modern paintings and drawings by Balinese and other Indonesian artists. Look for the lovely early pigment on bark work, “The Cosmic Lovers” and bold and original ink drawings by Gusti Nyoman Lempad. We particularly liked Ida Bagus Nyoman Rai’s drawings of Swiss artist Theo Meier dressed in various guises, and later in the exhibition you can see Meier’s paintings of Ida Bagus Nyoman Rai.

Galleries two until five showcase works by European, Australian and American artists who have lived and worked in Bali, divided by country or region including the joyous colourful work of Dutch artist Arie Smit and even some big names—a small work by Henri Rousseau. The Indo-European gallery is presided over by a beautiful large triptych, a collaborative painting by Theo Meier and Ida Bagus Nyoman Rai and several ink drawing by Australian Donald Friend.

Temporary exhibitions are displayed in the central gallery and at the time of our research showcased a retrospective of the work of ... please log in to read the rest of this story.
