Pejaten

Our rating:

The process is labour intensive, but surprisingly efficient with moulds used to stamp the clay into the shape of roof tiles which are then stored on racks prior to firing.

There are also other ceramics made in town from white clay shipped in from Kalimantan. Many of these ceramics find their way into gift shops in the major tourist towns in the south and Ubud.

To visit the workshops of Pejaten, simply park your own transport near the market and walk along side roads and enter any of the active workshops you see.

The local people will be happy to show you the process with a mixture of hand signals and broken English (or Indonesian if you speak it) and no purchase or donation is necessary.

Pejaten is 1km west of Pandakgede which is on the main road to Tanah Lot and is worth the detour.
