Trowulan

4 1

This famous Hindu-Buddhist empire was the precursor to modern-day Bali and many architectural qualities found in Balinese structures are seen in the buildings of Trowulan.

It's a wonderful place to explore on becak as the driver takes you on a leisurely ride along quiet backroads to these remarkable relics which are infrequently visited by foreign tourists.

Some of the structures around Trowulan were used as temples and are named Candi. Some of these Candi rise to heights of more than 15 metres and cut a stunning figure within the pristinely-manicured temple grounds.

Before touring these temples by becak, it is possible to visit the equally impressive Majapahit Museum a kilometre southeast of the main road in Trowulan. Inside the museum are hundreds of artifacts uncovered from the surrounding areas with descriptions both in Indonesian and English.

How to get there
Getting to Trowulan by public transport is easy. Make your way to the Purabaya/Bungurasih bus terminal 13 kilometres south of Surabaya. Public buses from all around the city head to Bungurasih and if you stand on a main road heading south, you will sooner or later see a bus heading to Bungurasih (3,000 rupiah). Upon arriving at Purabaya/Bungurasih, ask one of the touts for a bus that heads to Trowulan. As there are many buses departing Purabaya/Bungurasih for destinations beyond Trowulan, finding an appropriate bus should take no time at all. Upon arriving in the town of Trowulan, ask a local becak driver for a tour. A tour taking approximately three hours will cost no more than 50,000 rupiah and will include the museum and a handful of the better temples in the area. We recommend insisting on visiting Candi Brahu and Candi Bajangrtu at a minimum as these are two of the more impressive structures within the area. To get back to Surabaya from Trowulan, simply stand on the side of the road and flag down a northward bound bus. This attraction probably doesn't get as much attention as it should and is certainly worth a look.
