One of the more popular activities in Chiang Khan is to climb the small mountain known as Phu Tok for views of the Mekong, the town and the "sea of fog" that often blankets it all in the early morning.
The summit hosts a small Buddha image and walkway that affords views in every direction. You’ll also find a small swing set and flower garden. Phu Tok is located around five kilometres to the southeast of town but cycling here isn’t easy due to the hilly terrain. A tuk tuk will cruise you here for around 100 baht one-way, then you have no choice but to take a songthaew to the top for an additional 25 baht per person.
If you have your own wheels, head south off Sri Chiang Khan Road just east of the hospital, following a blue-and-white roofed sign with only Thai script. Bear left after a few km to follow a white sign with a red arrow and blue Thai script.
