Boat trips

Our rating:

Boat tours along the Mekong taking in the scenery of a bit of Laos, Burma and Thailand, and usually making a stop at a Lao market (or souvenir stalls), generally last around an hour.

The official entry point into Laos is at Chiang Khong and foreign tourists can not normally get stamped in or out at Sob Ruak. You can however, if you deposit your passport at immigration, cross over the river for a few hours. Shuttle boats cost 30 baht each way and when we enquired Thai officials stated that no Mae Sai-style payments were required.

Alternatively you should be able to find a private boat to take you over to Laos to either a local market or the casino, wait and bring you back for around 300 baht.

Prices depend upon the size of the boat not the number of passengers. Expect to pay 500 baht for a small boat (up to five people), 1,000 baht for a medium one holding up to eight people, and 1,200 baht for a boat holding up to 30. These are either the infamous Mekong speedboats (take ear plugs), or larger, slower longtail-type ones with roofs. The boat trip office is down in the river side carpark, opposite Near River Restaurant.
