Get wet
You may get some decent catches near Hoa’s Place or My An beach, where you can rent good quality long and short boards at Gunnar and Thom’s (just back from the Indochine Da Nang hotel) from US$3-4 per hour or nearby Tam’s Surf Pub where board hire can be arranged for $5 a day. November through to March is the optimum time of the year for surfing here, when windswells are at their peak. For beginners, the months of April, May, August and September bring inconsistent knee-to-shoulder-high waves.
This stretch of coastline is however notorious for dangerous riptides and although Da Nang’s local surf club, Da Boys, are in the process of trying to set up a surf life rescue on My Khe beach, for now it remains unattended. If you are not a strong swimmer, take precautions and ask for advice before taking to the waves.
