Boat trips around the bay

Our rating:

We like Ha Long City, but there’s really very little reason to stay here unless you’re going to get on a boat to explore Ha Long Bay at some point.

A day trip is only going to get you into the first part of Ha Long Bay, but that’s as far as the one-night boat trips go anyway, so you aren’t missing much – apart from a night on a boat. Tours can be booked at agents in the city for around $25 for a four-hour trip, and $45 for six hours, including lunch. This includes your entry to Ha Long Bay and likely some activities – but check carefully what’s included.

Agents can be found opposite the post office on the beach side, further along Ha Long Road – towards the pier – and on Vuon Dao Street. Day trips leave from the town at 07:00 and 12:00 and last four or six hours. The slightly cheaper option is to take the number 3 bus to the pier (7,000 VND) and pay 100,000 VND for a four-hour boat trip (150,000 VND for six hours including cave and beach) plus 120,000 VND entrance fee. No need to book in advance and the boats leave at 12:30. Don’t expect a luxurious boat – or even any functioning loungers – but who cares: it’s Ha Long.

You can also book overnight trips from Ha Long City but the prices are likely to be on a par with the price you’ll pay in Hanoi, so you might as well do a round trip from Hanoi – transport included – unless you want to spend some time in Ha Long City.
