Located four kilometres from Ha Tien and just three kilometres shy of the Cambodian border, Thach Dong cave pagoda is the only notable Buddhist pagoda in town that really deserves a visit – so why not stop and stretch your legs if you are on your way too/from the border? Enter the labyrinthine caverns to find cloistered altars and chambers concealing funerary tablets.
The echoing tunnels and dark stairs up to small grottos are strangely atmospheric, adding a solemnity to the simple shrines. Hike up one of the openings to enjoy a good view of rice fields and hills of Cambodia. The cavern is sometimes home to a colony of bats, so you decide whether to look directly up.
The entrance has a large gate adorned with the name, so you can’t miss it from the road.
