Afternoon market

Myawaddy’s afternoon market is a very authentic local-style market and one of the best we’ve come across in Burma (Myanmar). It’s like Hpa-an’s market used to be – brilliant! Shwe Muay Wan Pagoda

Myawaddy’s principal in-town temple Shwe Muay Wan is a moderately large complex. It follows the classic Burmese design of a large, gold-clad central stupa surrounded by subsidiary shrines and halls. Temple tour

For a small town, Myawaddy has a fair collection of noteworthy temples, so if you have an hour or two up your sleeve it’s well worth grabbing a taxi of some form and checking them out. If you’re not in a hurry, it makes for a good walk too through pleasant residential areas that are a contrast to the bustle of Myawaddy’s main drag. Myawaddy to Hpa-an

Onward travel from Myawaddy was until very recently a rather arduous procedure. Myawaddy is separated from Hpa-an, and indeed the rest of the country, by the Dawna Mountain range and in earlier times the transport infrastructure consisted of a one-lane rough track over the scenic but rugged hills.
