Things to see and do

The Khao Lak area boasts one of the highest number of dive operations of any destination in Thailand. Ban Nam Khem and Tsunami Memorial

A handful of youngsters kick a soccer ball along the beach. Early evening smoke rises from a grilled fish vendor’s cart. A soft orange glow blankets the sky as gentle waves lap upon the shore. Life has returned to normal in the picturesque seaside hamlet of Baan Nam Kem, but memories of the day in late December 2004 when the worst tsunami in memory tore across the village remain as real today ... Of the two, Ton Chongfa is both easier to reach and more stunning with water cascading from multiple levels of cliff, the highest of which is ... Read more about Lamru Khao Lak National Park .

Butterfly farm and orchid garden
T: T: (085) 211 1488

Run by an interesting Norwegian chap, the butterfly and orchid farm is set in a nondescript locale off Phet Kasem Rd in Khuk Khak, at the end of a tiny dirt road surrounded by forest. It's not a huge place, but worth the trip, particularly for the butterfly farm that features several species of colourful butterflies in a small, tranquil area that includes some flowers and other plants that ... Tsunami Museum
Bang Niang

Located in what's little more than a shop house along Phet Kasem Rd in Bang Niang, the Tsunami Museum provides an opportunity to reflect on the momentous impact the 2004 Tsunami had on the Khao Lak area through the documented stories of locals. As far as museums go, there's not a whole lot to see here, but the photographs of the devastation left by the Tsunami and stories of survivors is ... Read more about Tsunami Museum .
