Transport

Use the quicklinks below to jump to the desired section regarding transport in and around Preah Vihear Temple.

Bus

GST Express Bus runs a service from Phnom Penh, Kampong Thom and Krong Preah Vihear. Tickets are $8.75 from Phnom Penh.

GST Express Bus: #13Eo, St. 142 (next to Sorya Restaurant), Phnom Penh; T: (023) 218 114, (012) 838 910

From Siem Reap, Rith Mony runs a daily minivan service which costs $5. This is a notoriously unreliable company, so caveat emptor. Neak Krorhorm Express has a minivan service which departs at 07:00 daily, and costs $10.

Rith Mony: Route 6 (beside the Angkor Vattanak Hotel), Siem Reap; T: (012) 644 264
Neak Krorhorm: Hospital Street (opposite Old Market); T: (092) 222 224, (086) 888 858.

You could also take a taxi from Siem Reap, which should cost $75 return if you go and return in one day, and the same price for a one-way trip. You could probably negotiate with your driver if you’d like him to stay and bring you back if you’re returning the next day.

Getting around

At under 200 kilometres away, Preah Vihear is doable on a day trip from Siem Reap, or from Krong Preah Vihear (formerly Tbeng Meanchey, 110 kilometres) or even Kampong Thom (approximately 250 kilometres). An overnight stay in Sra’Aem though will give you time to explore the Ancient Staircase (only 2,442 steps!) and the gorgeous surrounding forest, and perhaps the Eco-Global Museum when it opens.

If you’re staying in Sra’Aem, you can find a driver to take you to the temple. Your guesthouse should be able to help you out with this. If you take a moto, the fee should be $10 to the ticket site, and another $5 to take you to the top. A car should cost $25 including the trip to the top.
