Buses on the Java-Bali route between Gilimanuk and Ubung Terminal in Denpasar regularly travel along the main highway passing Medewi’s various villages and it’s a matter of flagging one down and jumping on. Generally the larger coach buses will whizz on by, but the non-air-con minibuses will pick you up. The fare to Denpasar (Ubung Terminal) or Tabanan is 30,000 rupiah (2–3 hours) and to Gilimanuk is 50,000 rupiah (2–3 hours)—although you may be asked to pay extra if you have a surfboard in tow. Wherever you choose to stay, you won’t have to walk more than one kilometre, and often less.
Ojeks (motorbike taxis) and taxis are easily arranged at your accommodation. An ojek between local villages is 20,000 rupiah, and for a round trip to Pura Rambut Siwi and Bunut Bolong 50,000 rupiah. A taxi to the airport, Kuta, Seminyak or Ubud is 500,000-600,000 rupiah depending on where you stay. Taxis to Balian are 200,000-300,000 rupiah depending on where you stay.
Be aware that if you plan to self drive, the main road is the primary transport route for large trucks transporting goods between Java and Bali and is not only traffic clogged, can be very dangerous with crazy drivers overtaking on blind corners, accidents are not infrequent. Hati Hati, and remember “might is right”—large trucks have right of way (or think they do). If you are not familiar with Asian road conditions we would recommend hiring a car with driver then you can sit back and admire the scenery.
Scooters can be hired for 60,000 per day.
