Minibuses otherwise known as L300s run to Medan, Banda Aceh and Ketambe both in the morning and at night from the bus terminal on Jalan Terminal in the centre of town, although some of these services are on an as-needs basis. You'll certainly need to check at the terminal the day before departure to find out what the next day's schedules are. Some departures are more or less fixed:

Medan departs at 20:30, takes 10 hours and costs 135,000 rupiah.
Banda Aceh departs at 09:00 and 22:00, takes 7 hours and costs 100,000 rupiah.
Ketambe departs at 10:00, takes 8 hours and costs 150,000 rupiah (this journey is prone to land slides, slippery roads and fallen trees, so an 11-hour journey is not uncommon).
Kutacane (for Berastagi and Lake Toba) is simply an hour further down the road on the same bus that drops off at Ketambe.
