How to get to and from Padang

Use the quicklinks below to jump to the desired section regarding transport in and around Padang.

Padang Airport is located about 20 kilometres to the north of town and has connections to Kuala Lumpur, Jakarta and Medan among other popular destinations primarily serviced by low cost carriers such as Lion Air and Air Asia.

Taxis to the airport cost around 120,000 rupiah and taxis returning from airport cost the same amount using the meter plus a 15,000 rupiah airport fee.

Damri public buses do make the run to and from the airport for 22,000 rupiah, picking up and dropping off at the bus terminal on Jalan Imam Bonjol. Departures are very sporadic, meaning that it is near on impossible to rely on the bus when you have a plane to catch.

Transport out of Padang is a nightmare as the central bus terminal doesn't operate as it once did. Nowadays transport companies all operate independently of one another and depart from their offices in different areas of town. Depending on where you want to go, you are going to have to do some research beforehand to determine departure times and locations. Your hotel is going to be your best friend, especially considering not one of the companies we spoke to had staff who could speak English. Some sample companies and routes are as follows:

Share taxi to Kerinci Sablat National Park: Price depends on passengers numbers, seven hours. T: (0853) 7851 8009
ALS buses to Lake Toba: Depart at 10:00 and 14:00 and cost 200,000 and 220,000 rupiah respectively. You'll need to get out to their terminal on the bypass on the outskirts of town by taxi. T: (0751) 776229
Bengkulu: Depart at 10:00, take 17 hours, cost 200,000 rupiah. Call CV Tanjung Indah Travel on (0812) 6624 9333 or (0751) 789 4588.
Damai (for onward ferry travel to Melaka, Malaysia): 17:00, 12 hours, costs 150,000 rupiah. Call CV Sinamar Travel on (0812) 6657 3208 or (0751) 787 9543.

The best way to get to the Mentawai Islands offshore is by fastboat departing from the dock on Jalan Batang Arau. A full schedule is available from the office at the dock and it is strongly recommended you book at least one day in advance to ensure your spot on the boat and to confirm the precise schedule. Boats leave Padang at either 06:00 or 07:00 every day except Friday and drop off at Tua Pejat, Sikabakuan or Siberut depending on the day. Trips take three and seven hours and cost 250,000 rupiah and an extra 100,000 rupiah if you want to go to Siberut. Surfboards cost an extra 230,000 rupiah.

Slow boats also depart from the dock on Jalan Batang Arau for the Mentawais, but these are slow, wooden and unreliable. We advise to use these only if you have a lot of time on your hands and not much money. Boat departs Monday at 20:00 for Siberut and Wednesday at 20:00 for Tua Pejat and cost 115,000 rupiah for a place on the deck (bring a mat to sleep on) and 135,000 rupiah for a dodgy bed.
